How does CNC machining work?

There are two main types of CNC machining systems: milling and turning. Due to its unique characteristics, each can machining different geometric shapes.

Milling is to fix the blank, and use a high-speed rotating cutter to cut the blank and cut out the desired shape and features. Traditional milling is mostly used for simple contour features such as contours and grooves. CNC milling machines can machining complex shapes and features. The CNC machining center can carry out three-axis or multi-axis milling and boring machining. Turning is a method of cutting a workpiece by turning the workpiece relative to the tool on a lathe. Turning is the most basic and common cutting method. Most of the workpieces with rotating surfaces can be machined by turning methods, such as inner and outer cylindrical surfaces, inner and outer conical surfaces, end surfaces, grooves, threads and rotary forming surfaces.

Of course, not all complex parts can be machined with CNC. Although CNC machining provides great design freedom, not every geometry can be CNC machined. Unlike 3D printing, part complexity increases costs because it requires more manufacturing steps. Therefore, when design CNC machining parts, factors such as machining difficulty, machining time, and machining cost must be considered.
